Home body

This wet weather we’ve been having in Melbourne town has been the perfect excuse to stay at home for some indoor activities. I was the kid at primary school who was more than happy to be confined to the classroom at lunchtime when things got wet. How sad?!

Some knitting got done today and I completed Sharon’s stripy socks (for me). I loved learning how to do the afterthought heel (it’s just another toe!) brilliant! I took some progress photos of the transformation.

I am super happy with how they’ve turned out and they’re a great fit. If you plan to knit this one, I would recommend using a variegated yarn such as Noro to disguise the double stripe that you get when adding in the afterthought heel. If I made it again, I’d also add in more rows for the leg, I get cold ankles.

It’s been two whole weeks since I’ve bought yarn or fibre, now all of a sudden I’m discovering new amazing fibre clubs and awesome online yarn stores with super cheap yarn, bah! I’ve held strong inspite of this and have ordered my depiller…

Progress

Howza! It’s been a week since my last fibre/yarn purchase, and I’m surviving quite nicely. Me and my yarn stash could be on a nice little island somewhere and we’ll be just fine.

I will admit my thoughts have turned to patterns and tools, the purchase of an electric de-piller is imminent but I’ve been planning that acquisition ever since Pransell showcased one on her blog.

This week I completed my hairdresser’s pending baby’s Peapod Baby Jacket. I can’t wait to give it to her at my last hair appointment next week. She’s taking 6 months off, I fear she may not return and I’ll be down one awesome hairdresser… I got the buttons from Buttonmania, what do you think?

I did enjoy making the little garment, despite it’s size I forget how long it takes me to make little things. It’s been so cold this week, I feel a little guilty for not making the matching hat, it’s so damn cold. My guilt may get the better of me, I still have a week and a half.

I did say I was going to cast on the Op Art blanket for my sis this week, and here it is.

I still struggle with having more than one thing on the needles at any one time… I’ve completed Sharon’s first striped sock (minus the afterthought heel) and have begun the next. I’m hoping to finish these up before I get stuck into the blanket.

I’m also dreaming of my own winter-set to accompany a new winter coat. More on this maybe next time. I’ve happily spent the weekend at home, it seems the only way to get things done. I hope your weekends have been productive, hello winter brrrr…

Yarn/fibre Diet

I’m thinking about sending this flyer around to the local yarn and fibre stores nearby. Clearly I cannot be trusted to refrain from purchasing yarn upon entering a yarn store. Buying yarn and fibre is good in small doses, but lately I’ve lost a bit of self-control. I’m not going to name names or make any assertions but I know what my weak-spot(s) are when it comes to stash enhancement. Oh yes, there are several, and when they work together they equal YARN PURCHASE.

1. New Yarn โ€“ This is a biggy. I like to experience new things, experiencing new yarn gives me so much joy in a safe and comforting way. I don’t need to jump out of a plane to give me an adrenaline rush, just give me some yarn I haven’t seen before.

2. Limited Edition Yarn โ€“ Hello Wollmeise. This also includes souvenir and birthday yarn. It’s my one and only chance to purchase this yarn, I may never see it again, if I don’t buy it now I’ll miss out and I’ll be poking myself with dpns wishing I had.

3. My Favourite Colours Yarn โ€“ Pinks, greens, purples and blues; you know who you are and you clearly know who I am, because you’re singing out to me as I enter a yarn store.

There are other lamer buying points: I need a pick-me-up, I deserve to buy yarn, it’s Friday, it’s Saturday hooray, oooh it’s softโ€ฆ

If you are a yarn store, or thinking of opening one up, there is your recipe to make me beholden to you. Feel free to disregard my trigger points after all I have my own yarn store at home, I’m not that desperate to buy, much.

I’m going to try very hard to not purchase any yarn or fibre until the Bendigo Show. That’s less than three months away. Wish me luck.

Sock Fibre Club 2

A number of weeks ago I received my second installment of the Thylacine Sock Fibre Club. The great thing about the club (apart from the quality of the fibre and dyeing) is Megan chooses different blends each month that have good sock-making properties. The March colourway was ‘Sunburn’, made up of 80% Superwash BFL, 10% Mohair and 10% Silk. The colour was more variegated than the first month which I really like a lot. I really enjoyed spinning this blend. I was lucky enough to score an extra 50gms from Melanie taking my total to 200gms for some super long socks.

Here are most of my singles:

Which I in turn N-plied to keep the stripes.

I spun this fibre switching between my Little Gem and my Suzie Pro, as this was the cross-over time between being ‘allowed’ to use my birthday wheel. I also took my Little Gem to a spinning session (yay, for a travel wheel) after I began using the Suzie. Anyway, the combination of these factors, as well as the fact I haven’t got myself a spinners control card, so I basically spin blind, the thickness of the 3ply does vary from 4ply to 8ply (at the most). I’m really ‘ok’ with this for now. I’ll let you know how I feel about it after I knit it up into socks. Any suggestions for patterns? I’m tempted to just go Vanilla.

Spoiled

I’ve been ill this last week, it only lasted a few days, but one of those days was my birthday. I don’t recall the last time I’ve been unwell on my birthday, it was a bit of a bummer really. I’m acutely aware though how lucky I am otherwise in my life, my family and my friends so I’ll get over the disappointment of being pukey on my birthday, a temporary state of being.

I have been thoroughly spoiled by everyone in my birthday week/month, I feel quite special, but a little taken aback by the gifts bestowed. Knitters do give the most thoughtful gifts (as do husbands).

Last night was my final birthday celebration for the year when my sisters and their partners came over to share in cupcakes and pizza. One of my sisters surprised me with this large vase (and she’s not a knitter).

It was lovely to catch up with my sisters on the eve of a new niece/nephew arriving into our lives. It was good to see the baby bump, (oh my god it’s really happening) I feel inspired to knit for my sister’s baby, it needs to be clothed in wool, it is a winter baby after all. I hope to cast on the Op Art blanket this week (instead of just talking about it).

Wollmeise. It’s a disease.

It has been a couple of weeks since I’ve checked in with you. The main reason is, I was pushing through on knitting Folded. I was persistent and stubborn to get it done, and I didn’t cast on a single thing until it was done. I’m so stubborn, but Folded tested me; it really was a hard slog. At times I thought it would never be finished, ever. If I even considered casting on something else, I just knew it would be doomed. I also tried to avoid Internet time-suckage activities as well… but this worked to a lesser extent.

I’m happy with how it has turned out, despite needing to alter the pattern for the girth of my arms, I also heightened the neckline. This is a jumper that doesn’t need to be worn with anything underneath, so I wanted my bra straps to get covered with minimal fuss. Thank you to my obliging husband for the photographs; it really is a test for him to photograph someone so unphotogenic! Do not argue with this, until you’ve seen the hundred photographs that didn’t make the cut, you know I’m not kidding.

In addition to finishing Folded in wollmeise (I was sewing in ends on Monday night) I’ve also been waiting for my new Wollmeise for an extremely long time, 5 weeks people! Waiting can just make me sad sometimes. It finally arrived early this week and I’ve only just picked it up today. It seemed there was some holdup with this update judging by the comments on rav, with later updates arriving weeks earlier… the circle of Wollmeise, I’m right back where I started…

The new wollmeise is described as dark grey, almost black. I can tell you I have black clothes that are greyer than these three skeins, they look black to me! Regardless, they will make something yummy, maybe a few months down the track, after I’ve knitted a few things in 8ply or heavier…

The Wollmeise waiting game

You would have thought that my Wollmeise would have shown up by now, sadly it has not. I’m going through the anticipation cycle that is Wollmeise. I’ve tried to keep the purchase far from my thoughts; but hell it’s gotta be three weeks by now!

Whilst we’re waiting for the Wollmeise, Folded IS progressing very slowly (maybe the Wollmeise knows), I’ve just begun the second sleeve. Trying on the first sleeve, the fit was looking a bit ‘firm’, so I continued increasing until the top of the sleeve. Gentle reader you know I have fat arms… ::cough:: OWLs ::cough:: Tempest, I’m not about to make another garment that doesn’t fit, I can’t put my knitting group through that disappointment, not again.

Two thoughts met on Saturday morning, my birthday is getting closer and it’s been a long time since I paid a visit to Sunspun. Since birthday yarn is exempt from stash, I figured I should take advantage of this loophole whilst I still can. Sunspun had a great selection of all the new Rowan yarns, which made me a bit sad I hadn’t planned something with more forethought before I left home. The heritage tweed colours in 4 and 8ply were divine. Not to worry, I still picked up some lovely skeins of yarn. First up: Ella Rae merino lace (more like a 4ply, just quietly), I bought two skeins so I could make a nom nom Kitman shawl or equally yummy shawl.

I also grabbed a skein of schoppel wolle Admiral. The schoppel brand is showing up in a few yarn stores around town, but this is the first time I’ve seen the admiral kind. It is made up of 75% virgin wool, 25% polyamide. And it’s 3 ply ::swoon:: if you were having kittens over my 3 plied handspun, this is probably the next best thing if you love the mixture of colours that occurs when you have 3 strands. Or you can learn how to spin ๐Ÿ™‚

Still a few more weeks until my birthday, don’t you just love birthday month?

Keeping up with the Spinners

This weekend I finished plying my first sock fibre club installment, and in not a moment too soon. You see the next installment is more than likely to show up on Monday. Had that arrived before I had finished the first batch, I would have felt a world of doom on my shoulders. It may surprise you to hear, I won’t be knitting up this beautifully spun fibre (if I do say so myself). It’s going in the gift box for a special someone.

I also turned around a quick little project for a colleague. It is a smooshy hat made from some left-over yarn from my cabled-hoody vest. I often deflect requests for knitted items, but this time I relented. My friend really needs an awesome hat, she lives somewhere very very cold and she makes awesome cake. But that’s not why I made it for her (I don’t expect things in return). I made it for her because I know she’ll appreciate it. I can’t wait to give it to her!

I’m up to the sleeves on Folded. I’ve just wound up my third wollmeise skein. The reason I’m using the third skein is because at the end of the day it is a hand dyed yarn, the possibility of having a horrible changeover when the sleeves are joined in to the body without knitting from two skeins is too great. See, I can learn…

An expanding family

As some of you may have heard (the squees were that loud) my new spinning wheel arrived this week. Last year for my birthday I received a Majacraft Little Gem, it has been a wonderful wheel and indeed experience. My very first wheel and it will not be forgotten. The LG is a ‘travel wheel’, which suits my purposes very well. Have wheel, will travel. It’s almost as convenient as a spindle!

This year I decided it was time for a full-size wheel. Not because my LG wasn’t doing anything I wanted it to. But just because. I test-drove the Suzie Pro whilst at the Bendigo show last year; in fact I tried out ALL of their wheels, it was the Suzie Pro that tugged at my heart springs. I meet one of the owners/makers Owen. Who watched me spin, and be totally blissed out; in fact I think a lot of people watched my bliss fullness and if I recall correctly Susanne even took a photo!

Whilst my birthday is still a few weeks away, I wanted to make sure it arrived in plenty of time (I may have overshot the mark there). The fabulous Spun-out let me test-drive a few wheels (I wanted to be sure) and the Suzie was still an absolute winner, how could I have doubted it?

My wheel arrived this week, and one of the first things I did was to check the base for the signature of the maker of my wheel… It was one of Owen’s! This made me even happier (if that were possible). I’m going to try to abstain from using it proper before my birthday; call me weird but I like to feel like it’s my birthday ON my birthday.
